Description

Virtually nothing is known of John Roberts beyond the 23 keyboard pieces attributed to him, yet his works stand among the finest English keyboard music of the third quarter of the seventeenth century. Bridging the period between the simpler mid-century style and the brilliance of Blow and Purcell, Roberts developed a distinctive voice marked by elegant divisions, skillful use of style brisé, and a forward-looking sense of harmony and texture. His music survives in key Oxford and Lincoln sources as well as in Matthew Locke’s Melothesia (1673), which preserves one of the best English keyboard suites of its time. This edition presents Roberts’s surviving works in modern notation, carefully prepared for both performers and scholars.

Published as part of The Art of the Keyboard, a series of critical editions designed for performers and students of early keyboard music, the volume combines rigorous editorial standards with clarity and readability, making Roberts’s long-overlooked contribution newly accessible today.
